Here’s what a Neck Scan Shows
A neck ultrasound is being used to highlight the carotid arteries, which can show;
- Detect blocked or narrow carotid arteries; these can indicate increased stroke risk, as the blood vessels need to have blood flowing freely.
- It will help your doctor determine what treatment is needed to reduce the risk of stroke in the future.
When we are carrying out an ultrasound to look for nodules, growth of tumours, ultrasound is performed for the following reasons:
- Confirmation a lumps in your neck.
- Finding nodules that require a fine needle aspiration biopsy means tissue samples can be sent off for further investigation, usually to check for cancer.
- To find nodules that have been felt during a physical exam
Ultrasound is also used to monitor and observe lymph nodes; we do not use ultrasound for this for the following reasons:
- To determine the extent of the lymphoma within your lymph nodes
- To determine whether the treatment you are having is working
- Determine whether signs of lymphoma are recurring after treatment.

If you’ve noticed that a new lump has appeared on your neck, an ultrasound scan can quickly investigate the problem and work towards a diagnosis. This method is ideal because it’s usually painless and non-invasive. It could be your salivary glands or thyroid nodules; imaging tests will look at the soft tissues in your neck to determine what might be the cause.
Our neck ultrasound scan can be used to identify problems with lymph glands or salivary glands. It can also identify the cause of unusual, unidentified aches or pains in your neck. We may refer you to your doctor once we have given you your neck ultrasound and feel you need further treatment due to neck swelling or pain.
This scan is suitable for patients over 18 years old and will be performed by sonographers with years of musculoskeletal ultrasound experience. Make sure you remove all jewellery, including necklaces and dangly earrings, before attending your neck ultrasound.
